At last, consumers and enthusiasts can produce 3D VR180 content with good definition.
The SLAM VR180 3D AI Camera is a groundbreaking device that brings advanced 3D content creation to a broader audience. The crowdfunding Kickstarter campaign started today.
Key 3D Features:
- High-Resolution 3D Recording: The camera captures 3D videos at 8K 30fps, or 6K 50fps, all with 10 bit color, ensuring sharp immersive content. They also publicize recording in HDR, as it records in 10bit we hope it will be real HDR stored on the file, not only contrast and exposure compensation. Separation between lenses is 65mm, with Automatic Equidistant Projection for Fisheye Images.
- Integrated Android System: Operating on an Android platform, the SLAM VR180 features a 6.67-inch touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate (we don’t know why so high refresh rate on a camera with a maximum 50fps recording, we would prefer a lenticular 3D display instead). This setup allows users to control shooting, editing, and sharing directly from the device, streamlining the content creation process.
- Live Streaming Capabilities: The camera supports 3D live-streaming, enabling real-time broadcasting of immersive content—a valuable feature for live events and interactive sessions.
- Adjustable Settings: Users can modify exposure, white balance and ISO directly from the touchscreen, offering greater control over the recording environment and resulting in higher-quality footage.
Design Considerations:
While the SLAM VR180 boasts impressive features, its design presents certain limitations. Notably, the Android desktop included cannot be used in landscape orientation. This restriction makes an inconsistent experience for a device intended for being used in landscape orientation. This could be solved by simply using another Launcher by default (like the Smart Launcher we used for our ProMa King Tablet). Fortunately, this could change during the campaign, or before they start shipping. If you are backing them, make sure to suggest this little change in the campaign comments.
Another possible issue is that they only speak about the H.265 video format. Although they use a Vision Pro on their presentation video to showcase the capabilities, is not sure if they’re using Apple Immersive Video, or if you have to convert it manually on a Mac or video editor.
Also, it seems they are using Google Photos as default viewer, with its clear limitations for managing and editing 3D and VR content. 3DSteroid Pro or 3DMovieMaker would be a winning solution, even more in combination with a lenticular display.
Conclusion:
The SLAM VR180 3D AI Camera introduces a suite of advanced features that simplify and enhance 3D content creation. Its high-resolution recording, integrated Android system, and live-streaming capabilities make it a compelling option for VR enthusiasts and professionals.
6K resolution is becoming the minimum resolution for good quality in VR180. Though you have to choose between smoothness or more resolution, this one seems to be one of the best quality 3D VR180 cameras available to consumers. We hope they can improve some details before shipping the devices.
