Tencent, one of the world’s largest technology giants and a prominent Chinese powerhouse, has made significant strides in the video game industry lately. The company has acquired substantial stakes in major firms like Riot Games and Blizzard, launched its publishing label Level Infinite, and released several highly anticipated games.
Now, Tencent has announced a partnership with Intel to create the Sunday Dragon 3D One, a cutting-edge gaming handheld PC. This device features Nintendo Switch-style removable controllers on each side and is powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 285V APU, positioning it as potentially the most powerful handheld PC to date: the mother of all Handheld Gaming PCs.
Stunning Display Technology
The Sunday Dragon 3D One boasts a huge 11″ display at 2560 x 1440 and 120 Hz refresh rate, a significant upgrade compared to competitors like the Steam Deck, which features a 7-inch display with a 1280 x 800 resolution and a 60 Hz refresh rate (or 90 Hz for OLED models). Its column-interlaced 3D display delivers a 1280 x 1440 resolution per eye, surpassing the Steam Deck’s 2d resolution and offering an unparalleled glasses-free 3D experience.
The device also includes advanced eye-tracking technology, and allow users to seamlessly switch between 2d and 3D modes, offering both traditional gaming and immersive stereoscopic 3D gameplay.
Powerful Performance
Tencent and Intel have equipped the Sunday Dragon 3D One with impressive hardware. Benchmarks reveal that the Intel Core Ultra 7 285V APU, paired with Intel Arc 140V graphics, is twice as fast as the AMD APUs used in devices like the Steam Deck and the original ROG Ally. Furthermore, the 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM provides exceptional performance in resource-intensive games, outclassing handhelds equipped with the Z1 Extreme APU.
The device features a large battery capable of fast charging at 100W, ensuring extended play sessions. Its size also aids in heat dissipation, supported by two rear ventilation zones.
Enhanced Features
The removable controllers not only emulate the design of the Nintendo Switch but also offer more customizable buttons than a standard Xbox controller. The handheld supports a wide array of PC accessories, both wired and wireless, thanks to its three USB ports (including two USB-C) and a memory card reader. As the controllers are detachable, the full-featured PC can run as a tablet with its stand at the back, and you can use it to view or edit 3D photos & videos.
With 1TB of built-in storage, users won’t face shortages for game installations. While Tencent has yet to confirm the operating system, the company’s portfolio includes MMORPGs and titles reliant on Windows anti-cheat software. Tencent also owns Epic Games, making it likely the Sunday Dragon 3D One will emphasize Windows-based compatibility. This could position the Epic Games Store as a future leader in stereoscopic 3D gaming, with the largest library of Stereoscopic 3D games to date, if they put their mind to it.
Exclusive 3D Gaming Ecosystem
The Sunday Dragon 3D One will launch with a dedicated store for stereoscopic 3D titles. Confirmed games include Path of Exile, Blade & Soul, Arena Breakout: Infinite, and Sword Spirit. This curated library could make the device a dream hub for immersive 3D gaming experiences. Similar to Acer’s TrueGame ecosystem.
With its groundbreaking hardware, advanced features, and focus on stereoscopic 3D gaming, the Sunday Dragon 3D One marks a significant leap forward for handheld gaming. Tencent’s collaboration with Intel is poised to shake up the market, offering gamers versatility, and immersive gameplay.
