Over the past year, Canon has stayed at the forefront of trends aligned with users’ evolving priorities. Most notably, users demand more video content. There is also a continued migration to mirrorless cameras. “A third trend that we anticipate happening is the switch from 2d to 3D, and I expect that to be a very important trend going forward.” says Go Tokura-San, Chief Executive of Image Communication Business Operations at Canon.
Users are capturing more photos and videos than ever before. They are driven by the desire to create and share their stories. Canon is confident that this shift represents a significant opportunity for the imaging industry. Besides the three traditional user bases, a new group has emerged—the Creators. These individuals are redefining how imaging is used, pushing the boundaries of visual expression.
The Dawn of 3D Imaging
3D imaging may evoke different memories depending on your generation. Some people might recall nostalgic 3D movies viewed through colored glasses. Others may remember the short-lived rise of 3D televisions. But Canon sees beyond the past. They are optimistic about 3D technology. They envision a world where 3D technology is an integral part of our visual experiences. This includes virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR).

“We’re witnessing the expansion of the imaging world from 2d to 3D, VR, MR, and AR,” says Tokura-San. “This shift will impact the entire camera industry, not just for consumers, but also in the B2B market. Canon is in a unique position to deliver the tools that empower creators to bring these 3D experiences to life.”
Canon has already begun investing heavily in this future, with products like the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye lens leading the way. This isn’t just a concept—it’s a reality that Canon has showcased at major industry events like the CP+ Expo, demonstrating hardware and software designed for creating immersive 3D content.
Empowering Creators with the Tools for Tomorrow
Canon understands that the world of 3D imaging presents new challenges. Unlike traditional 2d photography, 3D imagery requires specialized processing and viewing equipment. However, this is where Canon sees its greatest opportunity. “As a camera manufacturer, we have a pivotal role in creating systems that support 3D images,” explains Tokura-San. “While we currently just have a new 3D lens, we are committed to expanding this ecosystem, making it more accessible and affordable for creators.”
Looking ahead, Canon is also exploring the integration of deep learning technologies to enhance its imaging capabilities. From recognizing complex movements to refining image processing, artificial intelligence will play a vital role in the future of 3D content creation. “This could reproduce the real image more precisely and realistically, and we want to use deep learning technologies to further advance that,” he adds.
By embracing the future of imaging, Canon is not just keeping pace with industry trends—they’re shaping them. With a vision that extends from 2D to the immersive realms of 3D, VR, MR, and AR, Canon is poised to redefine how we experience and create visual content in the years to come. The future of imaging is here, and Canon is ready to lead the way.
