Leia unveils the Next Generation Lightfield displays

By Leia Inc.

Leia Inc., unveiled its next generation of 3D Lightfield displays, which offer a “window like” view into the Metaverse and will connect more people, faster. They made various reference designs for PC and automotive solutions. This means they are not releasing the devices, but they will license the technology to other brands interested to incorporate it into their products.

Leia Inc.'s 3D Lightfield technology offers users the ability to switch between full resolution 2D and 3D, as shown on its 15.6" monitor and the Continental Automotive Infotainment/Cluster system.
Leia Inc.’s 3D Lightfield technology offers users the ability to switch between full resolution 2D and 3D, as shown on its 15.6″ monitor and the Continental Automotive Infotainment/Cluster system.

Showcased in a 15.6″ monitor at the Display Week Conference in San Jose, all Leia devices share the ability to switch between full-resolution 2D and 3D Lightfield. The 15.6″ operates in 2D at 120Hz in 4K, which supports traditional 2D uses like gaming, and switches to a 12-view Lightfield display when prompted by the app. The 3D parameters of the display respond to head-tracking, with a high refresh rate, and a rapid camera that works seamlessly with the SDK to update individual pixels on and with the monitor; the result is a deep sense of immersion and clarity — similar to how humans see things in the real world — while remaining comfortable for the naked eye. There’s also planned a 27″ monitor. Both will support the excellent 2d to 3D conversion featured on the Lume Pad, for everything (they say even chat windows can float on a 3D space). They also say that the monitor will not limit the view to one person, the 12-view display will still offer other angles without using the eye-tracking camera Let’s hope brands will be interested enough to incorporate the technology.

The power and potential of the Metaverse can only be unlocked when everyone can access it.

As you can see, games supporting the SDK, will be holographic, you can move the head to see the image from other angles.

The Continental Automotives Infotainment/Cluster system is also being shown, featuring a passive 8view Lightfield display driven by the Qualcomm SnapDragon 8155 chipset. The three-dimensional navigation solution for vehicle cockpits brings more intuitive interactions between driver and vehicle, thus enhancing driver safety. Leia’s 12.3″  switchable 3D Lightfield display developed with Continental is the first product ready for mass production. It comes in a flat or curved form factor to enable both traditional and modern cockpit designs.

“The beauty of 3D Lightfield is it enables a naturally immersive viewing experience on any display-based product from mobile phones to vehicle cockpits,” said David Fattal, CEO of Leia Inc. “Leia’s production facility is now fully certified automotive grade, and we’re working with leading companies across several industries to integrate 3D Lightfield displays into existing product lines. The power and potential of the Metaverse can only be unlocked when everyone can access it. Making this accessible to consumers everywhere is why Leia exists.”

“At Continental we’re always looking for ways to enhance driver and passenger safety and comfort – and 3D navigation shown on the automotive Lightfield display creates both an intuitive user experience and can contribute to driving safety,” said Jan Hermes, Senior Expert Advanced Graphics.

Leia is the first company whose software and nanotechnology screen underlay makes the  Metaverse and 3D experiences instantly accessible to anyone on any device at scale — quickly and cost effectively, without any changes to other existing technologies, engineering or programming.

Leia’s software platform incorporates a suite of tools enabling content creation and conversion from leading real time 3D engines Unity and Unreal Engine. Along with proprietary AI to convert any 2D picture or video to 3D in real time, creating an infinite content ecosystem.

Before you get too excited note the professional on the title. This is not a TV, it is a heavy (very heavy indeed) monitor intended to digital signage, but IQH3D allows the purchase to any 3D enthusiast. Not being a TV is not a problem in a world full of Smart set-top-boxes, sometimes with better capabilities than a Smart TV alone. You may even already own one at home: XBOX, PlayStation, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, etc… So you only need to connect one of them to this Ultra-D monitor and you will have an impressive Holographic 3D TV. The device comes with two HDMI ports and one USB for playing h264 encoded files.

Any Side-by-Side (SBS) or Top Bottom (T/B) content will be shown in 4K Ultra-D holographic format. The monitor detects frame-packed 3D image from 3D Blu-Rays and PlayStation 3 3D games. You will have 140 horizontal degree of liberty to view the holographic image, but even if you get out of that you will see a perfect 2d image instead a blurry one. Native 4K content in 2d and 3D can be played via the USB port and the integrated player. You have total control of amount of depth, so forget eyestrains for that 3D photo you optimistically did too near to the camera, and you will enjoy like never before that movie with that disappoining 3D so meh!…

Professional users and enterprises can control and schedule the device via USB and Ethernet. If you’re not an enterprise which can pay installation of the device you will need the help of a pair of friends for the installation as this is a professional product that weights 80 Kgs/178 lbs. But that’s not a problem for a real 3D enthusiast with the money to buy this device, and after installation your friends will enjoy with you a deserved evening of 3D cinema without glasses.

Speaking about the price, it costs $4900/4459€ but right now they have a 20% discount code at top of the website, so a discounted price will be $1000 lower ($3950/3595€). It seems a lot, but with discount that’s only a few bucks more than a high end 3DTV from Sony still available to buy in 2019 (at least in Spain, although you can find a cheaper Panasonic, also in Spain).

You can buy this Ultra-D monitor directly from the IQH3D store (they also have 3D cases for iPhone 7 and 8 like the one we reviewed from MOPIC):
