The King of depth: Why the Acer SpatialLabs View 27″ is the true successor to NVIDIA 3D Vision

For years, enthusiasts of stereoscopic gaming have looked for a worthy successor to the legendary NVIDIA 3D Vision and the community-driven 3D Fix Manager (3DFM), but official, thoroughly tested, and hassle-free. While several manufacturers have recently re-entered the spatial computing arena, the Acer SpatialLabs View 27″ has evolved not just as a competitor, but as the definitive platform for those seeking a premium, stable, and deeply immersive 3D experience.

A mature and growing ecosystem

Unlike other attempts that feel like “minimum effort” marketing, Acer’s SpatialLabs TrueGame ecosystem offers a level of polish and scale that sets a new industry standard.

  • Vast Library: The platform features a catalog that is updated monthly and currently reaches 240 supported games, And new titles are added at the end of each month with remarkable consistency, so maybe when you read this there will be more. This includes everything from modern blockbusters to classic titles, as well as games available via Epic Games, including many titles claimed for free during its weekly giveaways, and Xbox Game Pass, so there’s a good chance you’ll already have dozens of compatible games in your library. In our case, we already had an extensive game library built over the years through Humble Bundle subscriptions and bundles, Epic Games giveaways, and titles originally purchased for our NVIDIA 3D Vision setup. From day one, we found more than 60 compatible games in our collection, compared to fewer than 20 on the Odyssey. We simply do not have enough storage space to keep them all installed at once, and it will likely take us several months to experience and evaluate them all in 3D. Frequent Steam sales mean that even relatively recent AAA games with 3D support can often be purchased for less than $10, and occasionally for under $5.
  • Advanced Filtering: The launcher is designed for power users, featuring excellent filters for genre, 3D type, stored, etc. And sort by play time (in 3D), name, last played, or release date.
  • Multimedia Versatility: Beyond gaming, the software ecosystem is significantly more robust than competitors, allowing for the reproduction of 3D photos, videos, and models, and even enabling 3D videocalls via the SpatialLabs Eyes camera. Strangely we didn’t find the way to play Spatial Videos as the ones recorded with the own SpatialLabs Eyes. And unfortunately, the included software doesn’t play 3D Blu-rays, but you can still rely on PowerDVD 19 for that and use the SBS to 3D function of SpatialLabs Go. Most people use SpatialLabs Go (which allows to use the 2d to 3D and SBS to 3D features) with a floating button, but is more practical using it with the on-screen notification when switching to full screen, or even invisibly by simply pressing Alt+G to enable and Alt+T to disable. You can configure this in the SpatialLabs Experience Center settings.
  • 3D Audio: Another interesting feature of the SpatialLabs View 27” is its 3D audio capability. The system can convert stereo and 5.1 audio sources into binaural audio without requiring headphones, using the eye-tracking cameras to adapt the sound field to the listener’s position. As far as we have been able to determine, this feature cannot currently be used simultaneously with the 3D display mode, as both functions rely on the eye-tracking system. Even so, the implementation is an interesting addition that helps improve immersion when using the monitor in 2D mode. Furthermore, the size and positioning of the built-in speakers deliver noticeably more powerful and higher-quality sound than what is typically found in most monitors, reducing the need for external speakers in many situations.

We simply have not had enough time to test all the supported games in our library, and many more titles are still waiting to be installed due to storage limitations.
It is also worth noting that the TrueGame catalog has been built around well-known, high-quality titles rather than simply maximizing the number of supported games. Today’s catalog of 240 compatible games include numerous AAA releases, popular franchises, and critically acclaimed titles. Acer has clearly prioritized quality and player interest over artificially inflating the catalog with obscure or low-budget games added merely to increase the compatibility count.

The only meaningful limitation we encountered is, as with the Odyssey, the inability to capture or stream gameplay in 3D, something that NVIDIA 3D Vision allowed. We already uploaded to YouTube hundreds of gameplays in 3D with nvidia 3d vision. Enabling this feature would make it possible to share the monitor’s extraordinary depth effects with the wider 3D community, particularly those enthusiasts who still depend on NVIDIA 3D Vision. A workaround has been shared on the forums, although we have not tested it ourselves.

Visual superiority

The technical hardware of the SpatialLabs View 27″ provides a clear advantage in visual fidelity.

Even with the Samsung’s brightness and contrast at maximum, the Acer produces a brighter and more vibrant image at its default settings while looking natural. The Samsung appears darker, with grayer blacks and less shadow detail. Although this is a highly saturated example, other more neutral images still look vivid yet natural on the Acer.
  • Apparent resolution: While competitors like the Samsung Odyssey 3D also use LeiaSR technology, the Samsung’s lenticular grid makes text appear “rough” and difficult to read, Acer utilizes a less visible grid. This results in a much higher apparent resolution which keeps text a bit sharper and interfaces clearer.
  • Brightness and color: The Acer delivers higher brightness and much more vivid colors than the Samsung. Although the Odyssey 3D supports HDR, the Acer maintains a consistently vibrant image even without it. This is true even when the Samsung is set to maximum brightness and contrast while the Acer remains at its default settings. As a result, the Acer can achieve higher perceived brightness, contrast, and color vibrancy than the Samsung, even when the latter is displaying HDR content.
    This difference becomes even more noticeable in 3D mode. Games on the Acer look bright, vibrant, and visually striking, whereas the Samsung tends to produce a darker image, sometimes resulting in a loss of detail in dark scenes.

You can see this clearly not only on 3D games compatible with both platforms, but also in the 2d desktop or even looking the same HDR photo in HDR on the Samsung and without HDR on the Acer. The Samsung’s HDR highlights are not far from the Acer’s standard brightness levels, and they can be matched simply by increasing the Acer’s brightness (the Samsung is already at maximum brightness and cannot be increased further). However, at the Acer’s maximum brightness, the Samsung appears more natural. At default brightness, the Acer consistently delivers natural-looking images, even without HDR content. However, if you regularly consume 2d HDR content, the Samsung offers a slight advantage, as long as you avoid darker content, even when it’s HDR.

Performance and reliability

One of the most impressive feats of the SpatialLabs platform is its technical stability.

  • Reliable Eye-Tracking: The eye-tracking system is exceptionally reliable, barely ever losing focus. This allows users to move more naturally even when constantly interrupting eye-sight to look your phone notifitications.
  • Seamless Integration: The software is fast, lightweight, and stable, reliably detecting fullscreen mode every time. Users can Alt-Tab out of a game using 2d-to-3D conversion and return without needing to restart the game, as the 3D effect is automatically restored. Even if the 2d-to-3D conversion is manually disabled, it can be re-enabled at any time without requiring a game restart.
  • Minimal Lag: Performance loss when activating 3D is remarkably low, and the system avoids the “system-wide slowness” often reported in other 3D hubs, even when using AI 3D conversion.

The only waiting time is when you launch the TrueGame launcher, as it will scan your drives for installed games.

Confidence

Despite a few updates containing fixes, the Odyssey still have lots of problems, there are times when you simply want to play a specific game, but the system refuses to launch it. On other occasions, you may want to watch a 3D movie, only for the software to exit fullscreen mode as soon as you press the SBS button to activate 3D. Unfortunately, this can lead to frustrating situations where you come home expecting to enjoy some 3D content, only to end up frustrated after wasting time troubleshooting instead of actually watching or playing. In some cases, users have reported previously working games such as Atomic Heart remaining indefinitely on the loading screen and they can’t play them anymore. There are days when the Odyssey takes away the excitement of enjoying 3D.

This level of unpredictability is largely absent in SpatialLabs. In general, the platform provides a much more consistent experience, allowing users to work and play with confidence. Although the integrated media player has some limitations -in terms of supported codecs-, any other regular media player can still be used successfully for both SBS content and 2d-to-3D conversion.

Another issue we experienced with the Samsung Odyssey is the inconsistency of game support. A title that worked perfectly in 3D one day may suddenly lose support the next. This occurred several times despite the platform’s relatively limited list of compatible games. As a result, users may purchase a $60 game specifically for its 3D capabilities, enjoy it successfully, and then discover the following day that support has been removed, either for the store version they own or from the compatibility list entirely. We experienced this with Nobody Wants to Die (we succesfully played several hours in 3D, but we can’t play anymore in 3D because they throwed the Epic version from compatibility list), and Immortals of Aveum. Losing 2 out of approximately 20 tested titles represents a significant percentage. In other cases, the game remains listed as supported but simply fails to launch, as we explained before.

Acer shows its commitment to the community by actively addressing games that stop working

SpatialLabs handles compatibility issues differently. When a game temporarily stops working, the launcher often displays a notification informing users that the issue is known and that a fix is being developed. Among more than 60 supported games that we tested, we encountered this situation only once, with Deus Ex. Additionally, in our case, Forza Horizon 5 exhibited incorrect 3D rendering, but the official forums provided a direct channel to report the problem and communicate with the development team. By comparison, we could not identify any official feedback channel for Samsung, despite encountering launch or compatibility issues with multiple games.

For users running antivirus or antimalware software, both systems may occasionally fail to activate the 3D effect. After exiting fullscreen mode, users may discover that the security software has blocked the SREyeTracking.exe process. Allowing this process or adding it to the exception list typically restores proper functionality. Since the same process is used by both platforms, this behavior is not a fault of either Samsung or Acer.

3D modes

Acer offer games with two different rendering techniques, so more games can be enjoyed in 3D:

  1. 3D Ultra: This is the mode which produces the best results and allows extreme settings. Used by the majority of the 240 titles, this mode utilizes a second in-game camera to provide a perfect, intense, and satisfying stereoscopic experience with maximum depth, and totally adjustable effect.
  2. 3D+ (Depth Maps): For titles that do not support a second camera, this mode uses object volumetrics to generate depth. Although it may occasionally produce minor visual artifacts or halo effects —since the system cannot determine the shape or depth of objects hidden behind closer ones— it enables users to experience 3D in games that would otherwise be incompatible.
    This technique works particularly well in driving games, where such artifacts and halos are usually barely noticeable due to the game’s perspective and the strong focus on the main subject, resulting in a convincing 3D effect.
  3. Acer’s AI-powered 2D-to-3D conversion is less accurate than Samsung’s when rendering people, but it performs reasonably well in environmental scenes while placing a much lighter load on system resources. As a result, some retro games can look surprisingly good.
    The feature offers three quality settings, and even the highest setting has only a modest impact on performance on our test system. This makes it possible to play modern games with the converter enabled—something that remains impractical on Samsung’s implementation, even with a $2,000 GeForce RTX 5090.
    The trade-off is lower conversion quality, which makes the feature best suited to specific types of games. Racing titles such as Asphalt Legends, for example, can deliver results comparable to the game’s native 3D mode on the 3D One. The technology is also well suited for some YouTube videos.
    But for video and AI-converted movies, however, Samsung remains better choice, while the 3D One offers an even superior experience for this type of content.

Games that stand out on this monitor

After only one month with the monitor, we still have not had the opportunity to explore all the 3D content available in our game library. Nevertheless, these are the games that have impressed us the most so far:

  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
    Delivers a cinematic 3D experience reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster. Reflections exhibit remarkable depth and intensity, creating an almost HDR-like visual impact. From claustrophobic interiors to vast planetary vistas, the stereoscopic effect enhances the scale and spectacle of every scene.
  • Outriders
    Offers exceptional depth across both foreground and distant elements, with richly detailed environments that greatly benefit from stereoscopic rendering. The automatic convergence adjustments between scenes help maintain an optimal balance between immersion and viewing comfort.
  • Atomic Heart
    Builds upon the already impressive 3D presentation found on the Odyssey by adding greater depth to distant objects while benefiting from a brighter image. The result is a more immersive experience, accompanied by smoother overall performance. Eye comfort remains excellent even at the same or higher depth settings than those used on the Odyssey, where the eyes tend to feel more strained.
  • Soul Calibur VI
    One of the most impressive 3D experiences available on the platform. Character models, stages, and visual effects benefit enormously from stereoscopic rendering, delivering a level of immersion comparable to—and in some aspects exceeding—the classic NVIDIA 3D Vision experience.
  • Expeditions: Rome
    The game’s isometric perspective translates exceptionally well to 3D, providing substantial scene depth. The available depth adjustments allow users to enhance the effect significantly while maintaining excellent viewing comfort.
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
    The vast open-world environments gain a new sense of scale and presence in 3D. Exploring landscapes, dungeons, and cities becomes considerably more immersive thanks to the added depth throughout the world.
  • Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition
    A strong showcase for what can be done even with the 3D+ mode. The game’s fast-paced action, dramatic set pieces, and large-scale environments create numerous memorable stereoscopic moments.
  • Need for Speed Heat
    Provides a highly enjoyable 3D racing experience that recalls the depth and immersion achieved by classic racing titles played with eDimensional and NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses. Despite using 3D+ rather than a native 3D Ultra profile, the results remain impressive.
  • MARVEL Midnight Suns
    The game’s camera perspective and extensive use of visual effects translate particularly well to stereoscopic rendering. Combat sequences gain additional depth and visual impact, enhancing both presentation and immersion.
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
    Both cockpit and external camera views benefit greatly from 3D. The added sense of scale and distance contributes to an exceptionally immersive driving experience.
  • Dirt Rally 2.0
    Although it relies on 3D+ rather than a native profile, the cockpit view delivers a highly convincing sense of depth and speed. The resulting immersion significantly enhances the rally driving experience.

Eye comfort

Despite providing a much more intense and wide 3D effect than its peers, the SpatialLabs View 27″ is surprisingly comfortable. Its tracking stability also helps to eliminate the “vergence-accommodation conflict,” allowing for prolonged gaming sessions without visual fatigue. Enthusiasts will also appreciate that the 3D depth is configurable beyond default limits, and the interface will feel familiar to anyone who spent years using NVIDIA 3D Vision. If you put the same game on SpatialLabs than on Odyssey, your eyes remains much more relaxed in the SpatialLabs even with much higher pop-out + pop-in.

While most games on the Odyssey offer only moderate depth, only a few titles—such as Atomic Heart—allow noticeable pop-out effects. Even then, the effect can be somewhat tiring for the eyes and may introduce some ghosting. While ghosting on the Odyssey is primarily visible on pop-out objects, on the SpatialLabs it tends to appear on distant objects located deeper within the scene. On the Odyssey, Atomic Heart game relies exclusively on constant pop-out of the player, but backgrounds looks mostly flat. SpatialLabs, on the other hand, adds substantial pop-in depth while preserving the same strong pop-out effects, creating a far richer and more convincing 3D experience.

In Soul Calibur VI, the Odyssey delivers a good but relatively mild 3D experience. The effect is comparable to watching a movie in a theater with conservative, unambitious 3D settings: the sense of depth is present, but it rarely stands out. With SpatialLabs, the experience is noticeably different. Even at the default settings, both foreground and background objects exhibit greater depth and separation. Moreover, users can significantly increase the depth and convergence settings. At 100%, the game already provides an exceptional 3D experience, but SpatialLabs allows advanced users to push these parameters even further, up to 150%.

These extended settings offer a truly unmatched experience for enthusiasts who have spent years enjoying stereoscopic content and whose eyes can comfortably adapt to stronger 3D effects. The ability to exceed the standard limits is a unique feature that delivers a level of immersion that few other consumer 3D systems can match.

On the SpatialLabs, you can achieve similar pop-out effects while also adding substantial depth to background objects (pop-in). This creates a much stronger sense of volume throughout the entire scene, allowing you to perceive depth not only in objects extending beyond the screen, but also in those receding into it.

When combined with the higher brightness, the difference is no longer between good and bad 3D, but between accepting an adequate experience and enjoying the best 3D experience currently possible.

Despite delivering considerably greater depth and volume across the entire image, the SpatialLabs remains comfortable to view, without any eye strain. Playing the same game on the SpatialLabs is not only a brighter, sharper, and more vivid experience, but also more 3D and more comfortable for your eyes. It feels like moving to a new generation of 3D displays.

The final word

Its outstanding visual quality is matched by an ecosystem that finally makes glasses-free 3D practical for everyday use, combining exceptional depth, comfort, and content support in a way no previous 3D display has achieved. Perhaps its greatest achievement is that it makes 3D feel effortless. Rather than feeling like a technology you use occasionally to show off, the SpatialLabs becomes a display you genuinely want to use every day.

While the Acer SpatialLabs View 27 carries a more premium price tag, it justifies every cent through its superior build quality, image quality, optics, and software ecosystem.
