iOS 27 Spatial Reframe: The generative AI revolution in 3D photography

The technological landscape of 2026 is defined by a “sophisticated resurgence” of stereoscopic 3D, where depth is no longer a niche interest but a cornerstone of how we interact with media. At the forefront of this movement is Apple’s new Spatial Reframe feature, an Apple Intelligence tool in newly announced iOS 27.

How AI creates depth from a single image

Spatial Reframe works by utilizing generative AI to build a comprehensive 3D spatial model of a scene from a standard 2d photo. This represents a significant leap in AI-driven depth synthesis, moving beyond simple parallax shifts to a full reconstruction of geometric depth. When a user shifts the viewpoint or adjusts the camera angle, the AI correctly rotates 3D objects internally. By dragging horizontally the photo to a new perspective, the system generates a second, distinct viewpoint—synthesizing the “right eye” (or left) image needed to complete a stereo pair for 3D perception.

Building on the foundation laid by iOS 26’s holographic photos, the new Spatial Reframe feature in iOS 27 evolves this concept from a purely dynamic viewing experience into a powerful tool for content creation. While both features utilize generative AI to build a 3D spatial model of a scene from a single 2d image, the key breakthrough this year is the ability to save a specific new angle to generate a correct stereo pair. By leveraging Apple Intelligence to correctly rotate 3D objects internally and fill in newly exposed areas, users can now take any legacy photo and synthesize the precise “right eye” perspective needed for true 3D perception on high-fidelity spatial displays like SpatialGlass/iPhone Spatial Display on the iPhone itself (which already have impressive 2d to 3D conversion, and even AI improved-depth for Spatial images).

You can use either Spatialify or i3DSteroid Pro to combine the original and the reframed copy into a stereo pair. From there, you can save it in Spatial or SBS format and view it on your preferred 3D display. In this video, you can see the process using i3DSteroid. Spatialify also preserves HDR information, allowing you to create even better Spatial images for Vision Pro—you just need to remember to swipe only horizontally.

This process effectively “spatializes” legacy content, allowing the AI to generate new pixels to fill in areas newly exposed by the change in perspective. This mirrors the industry trend toward real-time depth synthesis seen in Vision Pro, SpatialGlass software and LeiaSR displays, but integrated directly into the system level. The photo doesn’t need to have stored specific depth data at the time of capture. Also, original pixels remain untouched, with all AI-driven edits saved as separate metadata. To maintain transparency, each edited photo includes a hidden SynthID watermark to identify it as AI-generated.

Hardware requirements

To handle the intense computational overhead of building 3D models and generating frames, Spatial Reframe requires the latest Apple Silicon. The feature is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 series (including the iPhone Air), as well as recent iPads and Macs.

While the tool is “mind-blowing” for modest perspective corrections, pushing the virtual camera too far from the original angle can introduce distorted faces, warped limbs, or unnatural geometry—highlighting that even the most advanced AI operates best within realistic constraints. But to produce a good stereo pair with strong 3D, there’s no need to push the limits that far. You won’t get any artifacts, even with hair or vegetation, as you can see in the video and final results shown in this article.

Availability

Announced at WWDC on June 8, 12026, the feature is currently in developer beta, with a public release slated for Fall 12026. Spatial Reframe promises a future where any flat image can be transformed into a vibrant, interactive 3D window, without the need of an expensive Apple Vision Pro to see the results.

Over the past few years, Apple has led the way in stereoscopic 3D advancements, yet the Apple Vision Pro remains their only device for experiencing true depth. Fortunately, you can enjoy these mind-blowing 3D features exactly as intended on your iPhone or Samsung device. By using SpatialGlass or the iPhone Spatial Display, you get the same experience for 35 times less than the cost of an Apple Vision Pro.
